The Charity Bowl Story
When I was asked by a friend, Johnny Singer, about helping to get a website started that would hopefully aid in the selling of his hand turned bowls, which he donates all to charity, I told him I thought we would need a page to tell about the "bowl maker", "craftsman", "bowl turner", or whatever we wanted to call him. His answer was a resounding "I want this website to be about the bowls, not about me!"
Well I could leave it at that and let you browse the site and maybe buy a bowl just because of the sheer beauty of the piece, or I could tell you just a little of what I know about how this venture came about and why he makes his bowls. I chose the latter....... but I can't do it without a sentence or two about the man that makes the bowls.
Johnny has been working with wood since he was a youngster, even to the point of furniture making. He has been hand turning bowls now for several years and he told me that for the most part he is a self taught turner only with the help of a few online videos.
Never intending to turn his hobby into a business Johnny gave his bowls as gifts to family and friends, allowed them to be sold at several charity auctions and decorated his home with them. He became aware of a local charity, "The Stewart Webster Cancer Fund", that helps cancer patients in the local community with travel assistance, prescription assistance and other as needed. This hit home on a personal level with Johnny and he knew then the purpose of his bowls. He had noticed at the auctions the desire of others to have the bowls for decoration pieces, gifts and whatnot, so Johnny began to sell his bowls and donate 100% of the proceeds to the Stewart Webster Cancer Fund. Well that's the intent of this website, to offer his bowls to a larger audience and to donate more to the cancer fund.
So that's the story on who and why, BUT!, you can CLICK HERE and read the rest of the story in this article from Southwest Georgia Living magazine that features Johnny and his bowls.
THE STORY ON THE BOWLS IS SIMPLY THIS: When you buy one of these bowls you are donating 100% of the cost of the bowl directly to the Stewart Webster Cancer Fund, who in turn uses that gift to help a cancer patient and his/her family who are in need.
